The Modern, Western, Christian system of indicating years by assigning them numbers from a single point in time and then designating them consecutively as B. Ancient Greek city-states used a completely different system based on local arrangements: each city-state identified a particular year by the name of the person who held a specified religious or political office in that particular city-state during that year. Therefore, the same year was known by a different designation in every city-state. Thucydides illustrates the complexity of Greek dating systems with his famous attempt in Book 2. Thucydides gave three different references to make the date of the first year of the war understandable by as many people as possible; that is, he hoped that any particular reader would be able to make sense of at least one of these three systems. To do so, of course, a reader would have needed a list that recorded in chronological order the names of the holders of the office being used as a standard of reference. By the fifth century B. Making correspondences between different local systems for indicating years, as Thucydides did, required research. The only non-local Greek system for indicating the dates of years was based on the celebration of the Olympic Games, which took place every four years.

In fact, ancient historians constitute its primary audience since this detailed and heavily annotated study provides the only complete treatment of the dating system that underlies the work of post-Thucydidean historians and, by extension, the chronology employed by modern scholars. In addition, Christesen traces the nearly millennium-long process by which the Greeks first came to organize their history according to Olympiads, then accommodated the histories of the Romans and other non-Greek people within this scheme, and finally adapted it to the needs of an increasingly Christianized world.

The production of Olympic victor lists turns out to be one of the longest-lived and most practical of Greek intellectual enterprises. Christesen thus reveals a side of ancient information science that has not been well explored and deserves further attention. The evidence for the activities of Hippias, Aristotle, and other chronographers is fragmentary and not generally accessible. Yet this is a small price to pay since he has provided all the material one would need to debate him about the unreliability of early Greek chronology or any of his other conclusions.

While individual authors of Olympic victor lists, notably Julius Africanus, have received considerable attention, surprisingly no large scale investigations exist of all the types of ancient literature in which catalogs of Olympic victors play a major role. The importance of Olympic victor lists, though, is revealed by the overview he provides here of the many authors including Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Eusebius whose works depended heavily on Olympic victor lists and whose desire to organize history in this fashion illuminates the processes of Greek historical thinking.

Establishing the date when an event occurred could be a challenge for those living in the ancient world. In many societies, dates were reckoned relative to the rule of a particular person. That person varied with where you lived. At the time of the Peloponnesian War, the Athenian writer, Thucydides, dated the events three ways: by the priestess of Hera at Argos, the archon of Athens, and the ephor of Sparta.

The lists of the archons of Athens were well established in the fifth century BC. A similar list of ephors was established in Sparta. Another list used for dating relied on the victors of the Olympic games, which were conducted every 4 years and drew participation from many Greek cities.

As the cities of ancient Greece progressed to their classical maturity, the need arose among them for a chronological system on a universally understood basis. Sometimes tenure of a priesthood provided the chronological basis, as at Argos, where years were dated as the n th of the named priestess of Hera. The correctness of the series was a matter first of memory and later of careful record. The list of annual archons at Athens was known back to bc in modern terms.

Lists of dynasties also amounted to recorded folk memory, and in all genealogical reckoning there is a point, for modern critics, at which acceptable tradition shades into myth. Corruption of the records was introduced through error or political design, and traditions often conflicted. Chronology became subject to systematization when cities felt a national need for accurate clarification of their past.

In literature the growth of historiography initiated a search for a method of dating that could be universally applied and acknowledged. In the 5th and 4th centuries, local historians used local magistracies as their framework; research was devoted to rationalization of conflicting traditions and production of definitive lists. Charon of Lampsacus, perhaps in the early 5th century, compiled a record of Spartan magistrates; Hellanicus of Lesbos , author of the earliest history of Athens, wrote on the priestesses of Argos.

Lists of victors in the great Olympic games were valid for all Greece, pointing the way to the widely accepted reckoning by Olympiads. The Athenian Philochorus was the latest early 3rd century bc of compilers of Olympionikai. The 5th-century historian Herodotus relied for his chronology principally upon the reckoning by generations used by his informants, conventionally accepted as showing three generations to a century.
